World Music Festival to Move to September in 2013

August 24th, 2013

The Cultural Collage World Music Festival, which showcases professional performers from Manchester’s diverse communities, is to take place in September for the first time to take advantage of the relatively quiet event calendar in the city at this time of year.

The fourth Cultural Collage World Music Festival will once again feature both free and ticketed events, including, for the first time, a Jewish Music Day on Sunday, 22 September 2013, which has been programmed in consultation with key members of the city’s Jewish community.  The day will include an afternoon concert “Cantors and Klezmer” at Manchester Jewish Museum, focussing on a variety of Jewish and Israeli musical genres, and an evening performance by Sephardic group Los Desterrados at Manchester Reform Synagogue on Jacksons Row in the city centre.

The festival will also feature two events at Manchester Museum on Oxford Road. A performance and workshop courtesy of award-winning vocal harmony group, Africa Entsha will be held on the evening of 12 September, and the venue will also host a World Music Big Saturday, featuring local world music and dance on 21 September 2013.

The Bridgewater Hall is featuring a concert of traditional Chinese music as part of the Little Bite Music Series at 12.30pm on Friday, 13 September and in the evening the festival is promoting a concert hosted by the Indian Classical Music Society Manchester at Ghandi Hall on Brunswick Road in Withington.

The festival will close on Friday, 27 September with the launch of a new regular monthly evening of world dance – Dancelands!.  The new event is aimed at people who love dancing, whatever their level, and offers them the opportunity to both try out different dance styles from around the world and to meet other dancers from different cultures.  Each monthly event will also offer classes from host tutors and demonstrations from professional dancers.

A Passport to the World of Dance

August 13th, 2013

A new monthly social dance event is being launched in Manchester city centre next month to encourage dancers of all cultural backgrounds and abilities to come together and try out each other’s dance genres.

The inaugural Dancelands, a collaboration between dancer Jane Wass of Mazazik Productions and Geli Berg of the Lingua Franca World Music Agency, will take place between 6pm and 9pm on Friday, 27 September 2013 at the Friends Meeting House on Mount Street.

The event is timed to coincide with this year’s Cultural Collage World Music Festival which focuses on professional performers from the regions diverse communities.  The first event will focus on basic dance moves and will also feature guest dance tutor, Jokeh Sillah from The Gambia.  We are also planning a surprise dance demonstration!
